I know I am a bit late with this review, but I had the opportunity to finally watch Uri: The Surgical Strike in theatres. A real life account of the retaliation by the Indian Army after the attack on the Uri base by a militant group from Pakistan is gripping tale that keeps you engaging throughout.
The film is reminiscent of other war films and thrillers before but stands out for me since it borrows narrative elements from those films and builds upon them, maintaining a balance between the drama and the action aspects of the film, whilst excelling in both of those tones, emotionally impacting the viewer.
The highlights of the film are the script, the acting and the action sequences. The script is tightly plotted, fast paced, divided into chapters, which gives it a unique storytelling feel, and does not drag in any way, while accurately focusing on the psyche of the soldiers as well. Vicky Kaushal gives an amazing performance as the battle hardened leader, whose stoic personality sometimes expresses emotion. The supporting cast comprising of Paresh Rawal and Yami Gautam also shine in their roles.
The biggest highlight of the film, is undoubtedly the action sequences. The action scenes are choreographed and shot expertly, resulting in numerous cheer worthy moments and reminding audiences of war films and thrillers like Baby, 13 Hours and Black Hawk Down.
Uri is a gritty and accurate portrayal of real life heroes, and is a great example of the new wave of Bollywood films being released. Do watch it in cinemas for the perfect emotional and adrenaline fueled viewing experience.
