Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2 Review: A Fun and Eclectic Work of Music

Five years after Vol. 1, Calvin Harris returns with Funk Wav. Bounces Vol. 2, an eased out, laid back compilation of sounds and vocals to close out the summer season.

Containing more of what made Vol. 1 great, the new album features an even more diverse star-studded lineup collaborating with Harris. The artist, who made a transition from electronic music to funk, showcases an even tighter grip on the genre through Vol. 2, whilst also incorporating hints of the rock, disco and tropical house styles which are peppered throughout the album.

Harris’ smooth instrumentals (primarily comprising of guitar, synthesiser and piano) is enlivened and greatly complimented with vocals from a variety of artists such as Dua Lipa, Justin Timberlake, Charlie Puth, Halsey, Pharrell Williams, Snoop Dogg, Jorja Smith and Normani who succeed in delivering an extra punch and an element of enjoyment in the playlist.

The featured collaborations also ensure there’s something worth listening for everyone, broadening the scope of the album in the process.

Funk Wav. Bounces Vol. 2 however, is plagued with the same problems that plagued its predecessor, wherein only a select few songs possess replay value compared to the remainder of the album. Some listeners may also be disappointed by the lack of vocals being assigned to some artists, as is evident in the cases of Halsey and Charlie Puth.

Nevertheless, through his new album Calvin Harris continues his mastery of the funk genre, contributing to the age of the neo-retro music as kept alive by his contemporaries Lipa and The Weeknd.

So tune into Funk Wav. Bounces Vol. 2 for a relaxed time, or keep it running as a playlist for a party. Either way, it is guaranteed to keep you entertained, grooving and vibing.
